Coburg Lake Reserve
Coburg Lake Reserve, a green oasis in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, is home to not one but TWO fantastic playgrounds. Coburg Lake Park is a great place to spend the whole day!
The Doug Hull Space Adventure Park in Lake Grove is the main Coburg Lake playground. The highlight of the adventure playground is visible from Gaffney Street. It features a rocket ship with several twisting metal slides. It is very similar to Navan Park Melton and Buckingham Reserve Sunshine.
Coburg Lake Reserve was once a bluestone quarry that prisoners from Pentridge Prison worked. It is now a wonderful spot for walking and picnicking. There are three playgrounds and pits-tops along the route. There are also great shared paths that run along the Merri Creek, to the south and north.
What’s the deal? Beautiful shade trees along the south bank of the lake are cared for by the Avenue of Honour, which was planted in honor of War World I soldiers
Three playgrounds are available to suit all ages. De Chene has a long-flying fox and a maze that is suitable for older children. The rocket playground (Gaffney Playground), is located on the southern bank. It has been renovated in recent years.
You will also find beautiful native trees along the walking trails, plenty of birdlife, free equipment for your gym, and great picnic and barbecue facilities all around.
You can get there by taking the #19 tram down Sydney Road, getting off at Gaffney Street and then heading east on Murray Road. You can also walk to Batman Station on Upfield Line, which is about 10 minutes from Coburg Lake. Alternatively, you can take the 561 bus from Newlands Road, east of the reserve.
DOGS
Please keep your dog on a leash in the Reserve.
Coburg Lake Reserve features a playground, bbq areas, bike paths and weir. It is located opposite Pentridge Prison.
There are several playgrounds, including the charmingly decorated Outdoor Lounge and Doug Hull Space Adventure playground. There are limited spaces near Newlands Road. The main parking area for Coburg Lake Reserve can be found in Lake Grove.
There is plenty of wildlife around the lake shore and it’s wonderful to see families out on the weekends with brightly-coloured blankets. Kids are squealing with joy as they pass bread to the energetic, sometimes frightening ducks and swans.
Before becoming a reserve the site was used as a bluestone quarry, where prisoners from Melbourne in the early 1900s were forced to work hard at digging out the stones. Many of these were used in the construction of Pentridge Prison. One wall of semi-quarried stones has been left exposed in the reserve to show the park’s former use.
