LaManna’s is an Australian Family-owned and operated business with its headquarters in Essendon Fields Airport.
From humble family origins in a tiny Italian town that was located away from Reggio, Calabria, to Nonno Pasquale’s first work in Australia working on a farm that grew potatoes in Colac and his first shop for fruit situated in Preston in 1952. The LaManna name has been associated with fresh fruit and vegetables. In 2008, LaManna’s was first created as an entirely online business that delivered fresh fruit and other grocery items while also providing excellent customer service to the homes of its customers located in Melbourne’s East in Melbourne under the name of LaManna Direct. A company ahead of fashion, LaManna Direct was the most popular specialty food delivery company in Melbourne.
After just 18 months, the company outgrew its original Blackburn North location and needed larger premises to ensure continuous growth and distribution and as a result, it was discovered that a new opportunity had arisen. LaManna’s founder, Vince LaManna, came across a brand new location, Hangar 89 at 10 English St, Essendon Fields situated near Melbourne’s very first airfield, Essendon Airport, where his father Pasquale was a passenger over 60 years prior.
The 10,000 square meters of the building was abandoned after decades of neglect and not being used. It was actually three separate dwellings, with brick walls and cyclone fencing between them. The area that is today known as the LaManna parking lot was grassland it was it was used for car storage in an enclosed shed. The location was previously dismissed by numerous small-scale businesses as well as large corporations It appeared that there no one with the vision of the opportunities the building would offer however Vince LaManna knew it was something extraordinary when he first gazed at the site. He had the confidence and the drive and his vision were crystal clear in his head.
With that idea in the back of his mind, Vince bought his family together to discuss his new concept, which initially seemed like an impossible endeavor however Vince had the determination to achieve his vision. Vince was a man with a simple thought, “That food needs to be better”. Vince set out to create a space that would “Bring people closer to food and family” by taking what is often an overwhelming task for the majority of people and making it an enjoyable shopping experience. An environment that can make you feel relaxed stimulates your feelings and gives the same sense of satisfaction that one gets when in the company of your loved ones and eating your grandmother’s lasagne and sipping on a glass of Nonno’s wines few of homemade cannoli.
In February of 2010, The journey began with a group comprised of 13 members, consisting of the LaManna Family and a Fruiterer, plumber, a butcher as well a salesman for shoes as well as a Panel Beater. a Legal Secretary and an accountant, and a Chef, with only one person who has experience at a supermarket. They all shared one thing to share that makes them so unique: the same passion and love for food the family, and their friends.
